In juxtaposing the beautiful Hawaiian landscape of the island of Moloka'i with the disfiguring and crippling nature of her disease, the author has managed to weave a bittersweet tapestry of the life of Rachel. While I found the cadence of the plot to become rather expected, I enjoyed the story and the expertly written descriptions found in this work of historical fiction. The photo above is from, beautiful, modern day Moloka'i. Overall, this book is worth the read...and only 22 more books to go in 2009!
